With roster cutdown day behind the Miami Dolphins, the process of solidifying a roster is closer to completion, but still in search of the final pieces to the 53-man roster, as well as the 16-player practice squad.
With the rest of the NFL also making its decisions on Tuesday, the evening into the morning and afternoon will likely be busy for general manager Chris Grier and the Dolphins front office. Below is a look at some players the team could consider on Wednesday, as well as our look at practice squad players the team should look to retain or sign.
The Dolphins select 13th in waivers, but notably it is not conducted the same as say, the NFL Draft. Once a team comes up in the waiver wire order, they select all the players they desire that are still available.
RUNNING BACKS
Miami is set talent-wise with starter Devon Achane and the preseason rise of rookie sixth-round pick Ollie Gordon II. But with just 10 days to go until the season opener at Indianapolis, only Gordon is healthy.
Second-year player Jaylin Wright has continued what was a disappointing slump down the stretch of his rookie year and will start the season injured to boot. Looking at what is now available, this is who would be good for Miami to consider.
– Former Notre Dame and recently-released Denver Broncos RB Audric Estime is 5-11, 227 and would offer Miami a strong inside runner. He averaged 4.1 yards as a rookie and could add another short-yardage dimension after Gordon. A fifth round pick a year ago, he was caught up in a numbers game after Denver added promising rookie R.J. Harvey out of UCF.
– Cam Akers is an option after being let go in New Orleans. After speaking with people in the Saints organization, his release was not as much a loss of talent as it was a move to add a different player who would contribute on special teams. Akers would be a reliable option, but his best season was 2022 with the Rams (786 yards, 4.2 avg.) and his addition would not bring anything spectacular to the position.
– Former Florida RB Montrell Johnson Jr. is another power back option for Miami. More of an option for the practice squad, he was released by the Eagles but played pretty well in the preseason, rushing 21 times for 77 yards and a touchdown and may have had a better shot if not being limited by injury.
– As could be expected, the Seattle Seahawks release of RB Damien Martinez has aroused many Dolphins fan with connections to his former team. The former Hurricanes back has good quickness and solid vision, but is lacking in NFL traits particularly relating to speed and power. His skills do not look like they are translating, based on his preseason film from Seattle. In his final bid to make the team, he ran for just 24 yards on seven carries. He shows very little yards-after-contact ability.
CORNERBACKS
Pittsburgh’s addition of Miami’s best returning cornerback (Jalen Ramsey) may have been a move toward size and away from a player of Beanie Bishop‘s stature (5-9, 183). But looking at tape from his rookie year, he plays tough for his size, he’s very good at getting his eyes on the quarterback and he came down with double the interceptions (4) of any Dolphins defensive back (Ramsey, Kohou 2) in 2024. He’s also very quick and shows good recognition and burst. He ran a 4.39 at West Virginia’s Pro Day in 2024 and posted 45 tackles, 7 PBUs and a half sack to go along with is four interceptions as a rookie.
– The Baltimore Ravens released Jaylin Armour-Davis but the question remains the same – is his talent worth the continued risk? Armour-Davis left Alabama with injury concerns and just one year of tape and has had issues since being drafted in the fourth round in 2022. That said, he is skilled, he has the size (6-1, 201) this defense could use in the secondary if this can be the year he stays on the field. That said, tempting fate with injuries is not something the Dolphins have fared well with in the past so it makes his addition less desirable for sure.
– From a practice squad perspective, Miami could consider either Kansas cornerback from this last year in Cobee Bryant and Mello Dotson, though Dotson’s 40 time prior to this year makes his addition less desirable, despite him showing instinctive play inside last season (5 interceptions, most in the Big 12).
TIGHT END
– If Miami is willing to consider another one-dimensional tight end, former Broncos and Giants tight end Greg Dulcich would be a good pick. The complaint seems to be Dulcich’s work as a blocker, which we know is paramount in Miami. His receiving skills, however, did see him selected 80th overall in 2022 and at 6-4, 245, maybe blocking isn’t completely out of the question with work. He posted 7 catches for 53 yards and 3 TDs in the preseason and had 33 receptions in a truncated rookie season, with 411 yards and two touchdowns. Hamstring issues held him out in 2023 and part of 2024.
OTHER PLAYERS TO CONSIDER
– Edge/OLB Brennan Jackson would be some of the same of what Miami just released in edge players Grayson Murphy, Matt Dickerson and the like. At 6-4, 264, Jackson has the size Miami likes and some serious juice as a pass rusher as he posted 14.5 sacks and 24.5 tackles for loss in his last two years at Washington State. He ran a 4.69 40-yard dash at the 2024 NFL combine.
– At 6-4, 294, DL Jared Harrison-Hunte posted a 4.86 time in the 40-yard dash with a 32-inch vertical jump, serious explosion numbers. He played defensive tackle in college at SMU but has the pass rush skills of an end, similar to what the Dolphins seem to be doing with fellow rookie Zeek Biggers. Harrison-Hunte would be a nice practice squad addition.
